How to Choose a Gaming Mouse: DPI, Weight and Wired vs Wireless

With so many gaming mice on the market, the spec sheet can feel confusing. These are the points that actually affect how a mouse plays.

DPI: higher is not always better

DPI describes how far the cursor moves for each inch you move the mouse. Very high numbers look impressive, but most players settle on a moderate setting they can control accurately. Look for a mouse that lets you adjust DPI on the fly.

Weight and shape

Lighter mice reduce fatigue in fast-paced shooters, while heavier ones can feel steadier. Match the shape to your grip: palm, claw or fingertip. If your hand is large, choose a longer body.

Wired or wireless?

Wired mice never need charging and are a safe, affordable choice. Modern wireless mice respond quickly and keep your desk tidy, but you will need to recharge them, so check the battery life.

Buttons

If you play MMOs or strategy games, extra side buttons are very useful for abilities and macros. For shooters, a simple layout with a couple of thumb buttons is usually enough.

Quick checklist

  • Adjustable DPI
  • Comfortable shape for your grip
  • Weight that suits your games
  • Wired or wireless, depending on your setup
  • Programmable buttons if you need them
